The best coffee in Kenya is found in a foothills of Mount Kenya, an extinct volcano which has historically contributed to the rich and fertile soil of the region. The washing station is surrounded by thousands of subsistence farmers who grow coffee as a cash crop alongside potatoes, bananas, mangoes, avocados and some livestock - usually a cow or two for diary production and chickens for eggs and meat. The average altitude of these farms is approximately 1750 masl, a factor which contributes to the fine flavour of the coffee.
Kenya produces one of the best coffees in the world.
A typical Kenyan cup is bright, light to medium bodied ( honey, sugary, syrupy kind).
It contains a wide variety of fruit notes depending on region, varietal and roasting profile.
We roast our Kenyans pretty light. Not too light to loose the body, but light enough so that the red fruit, such as strawberry, cherry and red currants shine through.
Longer roast results in a heavier body and different top notes. The raisin, plum and dried fruit flavours can be achieved with Kenyans if roasted a little darker.
Will experiment with this one.
