Huye Mountain CO2 DECAF
Coffee: Huye Mountain Red Bourbon
Altitude: 1600 - 2300 masl
Varietal: Red Bourbon
Location: Huye Mountain, Huye District, Southern Rwanda
This lot is produced in washing station in Huye District in Southern Rwanda.
Huye receives cherry deliveries from around 1330 producers during harvest season, who deliver their freshly picked coffee to 26 collecting stations around the Huye community. Typically a small holding in the district is just a quarter of a hectare in size, with around 200 trees. The yield is about 4kg of cherry per tree, so each family produces roughly 2 bags of coffee. It is entirely Bourbon, which, coupled with an altitude ranging from 1600 to 2300 meters above sea level brings about a lot of complexity in the cup. The farmers are motivated to increase the quality of the beans. To encourage the consistency of quality farmers with the highest scoring lots are given a cow ( 40 members last year) or a goat ( 60 winners last year). A cow makes a huge difference to the lives of the family since it will provide milk for about 6 years and constant supply of organic fertilizer for the coffee trees.
Huye lots have been placing high in the Rwandan Cup of Excellence in recent years.
